New World Screwworm Cases in the U.S. Test Federal Livestock Defenses
A developing livestock health threat is drawing attention across the U.S. cattle industry after confirmed cases of New World screwworm were reported in Texas and New Mexico, testing months of federal preparation and raising concerns about potential impacts on ranchers, animal health programs, and agricultural supply chains.
According to Reuters, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), state agencies, animal health companies, and federal partners have spent months preparing for the possibility that the parasitic pest could reappear in the United States. The New World screwworm is a flesh-eating fly whose larvae infest wounds in livestock and wildlife, potentially causing severe injury or death if left untreated.
The development comes at a time when many livestock producers are already facing elevated operating costs and herd-management challenges. Reuters reported that the pest could create multi-billion-dollar losses if it spreads widely through U.S. cattle-producing regions.
USDA Response Already Underway
Federal agencies began preparing long before the confirmed cases appeared.
Reuters reported that USDA coordinated with animal health companies, state governments, and other federal agencies beginning in early 2025. Preparations included accelerating approvals for livestock treatments, deploying emergency funding, and expanding sterile-fly release programs designed to suppress screwworm populations.
The report states that federal authorities have fast-tracked 12 emergency drug approvals through the FDA and accelerated approximately $100 million in grant funding related to the response effort.
One of the primary containment tools remains the release of sterile male flies. Reuters reported that roughly 100 million sterile flies are currently being released each week from existing production facilities in Panama. However, USDA is also awaiting completion of a new sterile-fly production facility in Texas, which is not expected to be operational until late 2027.

Capacity Questions Emerge
The Reuters report notes that some ranchers and lawmakers have questioned whether USDA has sufficient staffing and resources to respond if the outbreak expands.
According to the report, USDA animal-health staffing has declined by approximately 25% following broader federal workforce reductions. Critics interviewed by Reuters cited concerns about communication efforts and agency capacity, while federal officials maintained that preparations made over the past year have positioned the government to contain the outbreak.
